Episode 13: Why Giving Feels Safer Than Receiving

Season #1

Why is it so much easier for overfunctioning women to give than it is to receive for themselves?

Today’s episode is for the woman who is incredibly good at giving, she gives her time, energy, care, and support. She shows up for everyone else, yet rarely stops to ask herself: "Can I receive?"

If receiving help, affection, attention, rest, pleasure, or love feels uncomfortable or terrifying to you, I want to be honest: this is something I am still learning in my own healing journey, too. Receiving isn't weakness; it’s a vital part of healing. In this episode, we explore why high-functioning women struggle to step out of control, why a "pleasure problem" is often a "receiving problem," and how to gently practice letting care land so you can experience true, authentic intimacy.

Key Takeaways & Highlights:

  • Why Giving Feels Safer Than Receiving: Unpacking how being praised for selflessness and independence wires us to believe our worth comes from providing—and how receiving requires stepping out of control and trusting.

  • The Hidden Link to Intimacy: Why you can deeply desire closeness yet find your body bracing when affection, touch, or being cherished actually arrives.

  • Why Pleasure Requires Receptivity: Realizing that enjoying sex and touch isn't a performance to manage, but a receiving state that requires letting go of vigilance.

  • Rest as a Receiving State: Understanding why sitting still feels anxious or irresponsible when your nervous system equates productivity with survival.

  • Softness as Capacity: Redefining softness not as an identity or performance, but as a nervous system capacity that allows you to stop pushing and receive what is already here.

  • The Fear of Being Seen: Facing the vulnerability of being loved for who you are—the tired, human version with real needs—rather than the capable version who earns love through doing.

  • 3 Gentle Practices to Try This Week:

    1. Receive a compliment: Resist the urge to deflect—simply say "thank you" and let it land in your body.

    2. Ask for something small: Allow someone to help you with a simple task and notice what thoughts arise.

    3. Practice receiving yourself: Place a hand over your heart, ask what you need, and see if you are willing to accept the answer.

  • The Receiver’s Check-In Practice: A guided grounding exercise to help release the need to carry the world and anchor the truth: "It is safe to receive. It is safe to let love reach me."
