Episode 18: Why Softness is Safe: What Your Nervous System Has Been Waiting to Learn?

Season #1

Softness Is Safe: When Your Armor Is No Longer Needed

Have you ever looked like you have it all together on the outside while quietly feeling disconnected from yourself on the inside? Maybe you've become incredibly good at being strong, capable, independent, and in control, while longing to feel more connected to your body, your voice, your spirit, and the people you love.

If you've ever wondered why your heart longs for closeness, love, support, affection, rest, or pleasure, yet your body instinctively reaches for protection, this episode is for you.

In this conversation, I explore the armor I've learned to wear and why that armor isn't something I need to shame or fight. My protection developed for a reason. It helped me navigate moments when vulnerability didn't feel safe, when I had to be the strong one, or when slowing down didn't feel like an option. But sometimes the protection that once served me can continue long after the danger has passed.

Together, we'll explore what it means to understand my armor with compassion, recognize when I no longer need it, and gently create enough safety for softness to become possible. Because softness isn't weakness. It doesn't mean abandoning my boundaries, saying yes when I mean no, or tolerating mistreatment. True softness allows me to remain discerning while giving my nervous system permission to relax, receive, connect, and be fully myself.

Key Takeaways & Highlights

My Armor Makes Sense: I explore why my protective patterns aren't evidence that something is wrong with me. My armor is my nervous system's way of trying to keep me safe.

Protection That Outlives the Threat: Like continuing to wear a raincoat after the sun comes out, I may continue using protective patterns even when my circumstances have changed.

Softness Isn't Weakness: Softness doesn't mean becoming passive, losing my boundaries, or allowing myself to be mistreated. It means allowing wisdom to emerge without fear always leading the way.

The Cost of Armor: The same protection that keeps me from disappointment, rejection, or emotional pain can also make it harder for me to receive encouragement, intimacy, pleasure, comfort, joy, and love.

Softness as a Doorway to Receiving: When I begin to soften, I create more space for presence, connection, pleasure, intimacy, love, and the things my heart has been longing to experience.

Softness Can Be Ordinary: I don't have to make dramatic changes. Softness can look like taking a breath before responding, accepting help, receiving a compliment, resting before I'm exhausted, laughing freely, crying without apologizing, or honestly saying what matters to me.

Healing Isn't Becoming Someone New: Healing is about creating enough safety for me to become more fully myself—not becoming someone different.

Safety Before Softness: My nervous system may need small, repeated experiences of safety before softness begins to feel natural.

Guided Practice

Noticing My Body Armor

I’m invited into a brief somatic reflection to notice where I may be holding armor today.

Through a slow breath and gentle curiosity, I ask myself:

  • Where do I notice my body armor today?
  • What is my armor trying to protect?
  • Is there one small place my nervous system might be ready to soften today?

I don't have to force anything or soften all at once. I can simply notice, listen, and allow my body to respond at its own pace.

If this conversation landed on my heart, I can share it with another woman who may be quietly wearing armor, too.

I don't have to throw away my armor. I can learn to recognize when I need it—and when I no longer do.

I can choose softness.
I can relax into safety.
I can allow what is true.
I can receive what is good.
And from that place, I can give from overflow.

From safety, she receives.
